The school was set up in Tangshan, grew up in Emei, and expanded in Chengdu. At present, it has a complete education system from the undergraduate education, to graduate education students and then to post-doctoral education. There are 5 undergraduate programs:
1. Transportation Engineering,
2. Traffic Engineering,
3. Safety Engineering,
4. Logistics Engineering,
5. Logistics Management
among which, Transportation and Traffic Engineering are national characteristic majors. The top-level discipline the school depends on, Transportation Engineering, maintains number one in the major evaluation of Ministry of Education.
Transportation Engineering
The transportation major has a long history in Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), which can be traced back to the 1930s and 1940s. From 1937 to 1946, the school set up three departments, one of which was the Railway Management Department. This was the beginning of the transportation major.
Due to historical reasons, the development of major has been interrupted several times. In the early days of liberation, the school was renamed Tangshan Railway Institute. In 1956, Department of Railway Transportation was established. The corresponding railway transportation major was the predecessor of the transportation major. In 1972, the school moved to Emei and was renamed SWJTU. In 1985, Department of Railway Transportation was renamed Department of Transportation Engineering. The content of railway transportation major has expanded. In the mid-1990s, the original railway transportation major was renamed the transportation major. In 2009, the direction of urban rail transit was added. In 2016, the major was transferred to the Emei campus of SWJTU for special education. A professional school model of "two places and two directions" was formed in which Chengdu mainly studied railway transportation and Emei mainly studied urban rail transportation.
At present, the first-level discipline transportation engineering of the transportation major has been ranked first in the country for many consecutive years, and the second-level discipline transportation planning and management is a key discipline of the former Ministry of Railways, ranking one of the best in the country.
After long-term theoretical exploration and teaching reform practice, the transportation major has formed a perfect teaching system with reasonable teaching plans, substantial teaching content, complete teaching processes, and scientific teaching management. The major has strong faculty force. There are 52 full-time teachers in the major, including 1 professor selected to“Ten Thousand Talent Program”, 1 national teaching teacher, 1 Sichuan academic leader, 1 winner of “Zhan Tianyou Railway Science and Technology Award”, 2 winners of “Zhan Tianyou Youth Award”, 2 winners of “Mao Yisheng Railway Science and Technology Award”, 1 expert with outstanding contributions in the Ministry of Railways, 1 PhD of Sichuan Province who has made outstanding contributions, 1 winner of the Locomotive Medal from the Ministry of Railways , 1 top-notch talent in science and technology of the Ministry of Railways, 1 winner of “Huo Yingdong Outstanding Young Teacher Award”. The transportation major has 33 teachers with associate professor and professor titles, which is accounting for 63.5%, and 42 teachers with doctoral degrees, which account for 80.8%. The proportion of teachers with doctoral degrees is increasing year by year.
The major has trained more than 7,000 undergraduate graduates and more than 2,000 graduate students. The ratio of talent demand to the number of graduates has been maintained at a high ratio. The one-time signing rate is 100%, which has been widely recognized by employers and society.
The transportation major has undertaken a total of more than 300 national, provincial and ministerial level projects, and published more than 1,000 papers in academic journals and conferences in the world. Relying on the national key disciplines of transportation engineering, the comprehensive transportation intelligence and comprehensive transportation big data national scientific research and innovation platform, the transportation major has established a multi-level, three-dimensional, and all-round high-quality teaching resource system, forming a domestic "ten in one" leading transportation professional talent training highland.
After years of unremitting efforts and hard work of several generations of transporters, the transportation profession has become a first-class professional talent training base, scientific research base, achievement transformation base, senior technical and managerial training base, international talent training and academic exchange base. It has realized the continuous improvement of the quality of talent training and has an important influence in the same field all over the world.
Traffic Engineering
The Department of Traffic Engineering was established based on the railway transportation major of Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU).In 1982, SWJTU took the lead to submit the application for the new major, traffic engineering, to Ministry of Higher Education. In 1985, the application was formally approved and SWJTU started to enroll undergraduate and graduate students of traffic engineering major. SWJTU became one of the first three universities in China to establish the major of traffic engineering. In 1986, doctoral students were officially recruited. A complete talent training system for undergraduates, master and doctoral students has been formed. In 2008, the traffic engineering major in our university was selected as the Featured Major of Sichuan Province. In 2009, the major was selected as the National Featured Major, and the Transportation Experiment Center in our university was selected as the National Demonstration Center. In 2010, the faculty team of the Department of Transportation Engineering was selected as a national faculty team. In 2011, Professor Luo Xia won the "National Teacher" award.

There are more than 200 students in this major, and about 60 students graduate from this department every year. In the past three years, the employment rate of students remained at around 95%.The main employers of students are graduate schools, state-owned enterprises, and the military. The traffic engineering major ranks among the top in all kinds of evaluation performed by the Ministry of Education. Traffic engineering is regarded as one of the best majors of our university.
Safety Engineering
In the mid-1980s, our school began to engage in ergonomics and safety system engineering research related to transportation. In 1994, undergraduates started to be recruited. In June 1999, the "Safety Engineering Major" and " Institute of Ergonomics" of the School of Economics and Management were placed under the School of Transportation. In 2013, safety engineering was selected as a pilot program for national "Excellent Engineer Training” program. The transportation discipline of the School of Transportation and Logistics, where the safety engineering major is located, ranks first in the country. Relying on the multi-level and high-quality teaching resources and facilities, such as the “National Teaching Team” and the National Experimental and Teaching Demonstration Center established by the college, our department continues to promote the teaching and education quality.
